HEARING LOSS

Causes of hearing loss in children
  • Otitis Media - This middle ear infection happens often in young children because the tubes that connect the middle ear to the nose, called Eustachian tubes, aren’t fully formed. Fluid builds up behind the eardrum and can get infected.
  • Problems at birth - Some children are born with hearing problems.
  • Illness or injury - Young children can lose their hearing after illnesses, including meningitis, encephalitis, measles, chickenpox, and the flu.
Causes of hearing loss in adults
  • Damage to the inner ear.
  • Gradual build-up of earwax.
  • Ear infection, and abnormal bone growths or tumours.
  • Ruptured eardrum (tympanic membrane perforation).
Symptoms in Babies and Children
  • Do not respond to name call, loud sounds or no startle response is observed.
  • Do not develop adequate speech and language milestones.
  • Unclear / distorted speech
  • Do not follow directions. This some times is mistaken for not paying attention or just ignoring, but could be the result of a partial or complete hearing loss.
Symptoms in Adults
  • Muffling of speech and other sounds.
  • Difficulty understanding words, especially against background noise or in a crowd.
  • Frequently asking others to speak more slowly, clearly and loudly.
  • Needing to turn up the volume of the television or radio.
  • Withdrawal from conversations and avoids social gathering.
